Buying a used industrial generator is not like buying most second-hand equipment. The stakes are higher, the failure modes are less visible, and the market is full of units that have been cleaned up and repriced without any of the underlying issues being resolved. A generator that looks presentable at viewing can still carry £8,000–£15,000 worth of deferred maintenance — and you'll discover that figure the moment you need it most.
The UK used generator market has grown significantly over the last decade. Construction sites, data centres, NHS trusts, agricultural operations, and manufacturing facilities all rely on standby and prime power solutions — and increasingly, buyers are turning to the used market to meet that demand without the lead times and capital outlay of new units. That's a sensible strategy when it's done properly.

Every stage below must be completed before you move to the next. Skipping ahead — viewing units before sizing, or making offers before inspecting — is how buyers end up with the wrong generator or a costly surprise.
Define your power requirement
Calculate running load, identify surge loads (motors, compressors), and confirm your duty cycle — standby or prime power. No unit should be viewed until this is done.
Identify the right engine and alternator brands
Filter for units with UK-supported engine brands (Perkins, Cummins, Volvo, John Deere, Doosan) and proven alternators (Stamford, Leroy-Somer). This filters out 40–50% of problematic stock immediately.
Request service records and run hours log
Before travelling to inspect, obtain full service history in writing. If the seller cannot provide records, that absence is itself data — adjust your risk assessment accordingly.
Physical inspection — six checks in order
External condition → fluids → cold start → load test → control panel → alternator output. Every check informs the next. Skipping any one of them leaves a material gap in your assessment.

Use inspection results to price in risk. Cosmetic issues are negotiating points. Walk-away conditions are not. Any reluctance by the seller to produce a running demonstration ends the process.
Structure the purchase with written protections
Confirm run hours, condition, and warranty terms in writing. Cost delivery and installation before signing. Arrange a maintenance plan before deployment. The purchase isn't complete when you pay — it's complete when the unit is running safely on-site.
Step 1 — New vs Used: The Honest Breakdown
The case for used is strong when the application fits. A well-maintained used generator from a reputable supplier — tested, serviced, and sold with documented run hours — will deliver the same operational reliability as a new unit at 40–60% of the purchase cost. For standby applications where the generator runs 100–300 hours a year, buying one with 2,000–4,000 hours on the clock represents no meaningful risk when the maintenance history is clean.
New becomes the right answer in three scenarios: prime power applications where the unit runs continuously at high load, projects with Stage V emissions compliance obligations, and situations where a manufacturer warranty is a contractual requirement with your end client.

Step 2 — Getting the Size Right Before You Start Looking
Undersizing is the most expensive mistake in this process. A generator running consistently above 80% load runs hot, burns fuel inefficiently, and degrades significantly faster than one operating in its optimal band. Oversizing is the more common error — buyers purchase the largest unit they can find at budget, ignoring that a 500 kVA generator idling at 15% load produces wet stacking, carbon buildup, and long-term engine damage.
Calculate your running load first. Add up the continuous wattage of everything that will run simultaneously. Then identify your starting loads — electric motors, compressors, and HVAC systems draw 3–6x their running current on startup. Size the generator so your expected running load sits at 60–80% of rated output.

A site running a 37 kW tower crane motor, site offices, lighting, and a 15 kW compressor has a running load of approximately 80 kW. The crane motor draws 3× on startup — a 111 kW surge. A 150 kVA (120 kW) generator puts the running load at 67% and absorbs the surge comfortably. A 100 kVA unit would trip. A 250 kVA unit would run at 32% — well into wet stacking territory.

Engine brand is the single most important factor in long-term parts availability and service cost. Step 4 — Understanding Run Hours and Risk
Run hours are a guide, not a verdict. A 10,000-hour Perkins engine with a clean service history is a better purchase than a 2,000-hour unit from a fleet that deferred every service. Hours only mean something when you know what happened during them.

Step 5 — The Pre-Purchase Inspection: Six Checks in Order
Never buy a used industrial generator without a physical inspection. Photographs are not a substitute. If a seller won't allow an inspection, that alone tells you more than any specification sheet. Work through all six checks — in sequence.
External Visual
Inspect canopy, frame, and fuel tank for corrosion. Surface rust is cosmetic — rust at welds or on the base frame is structural. Check fuel lines, coolant hoses, and exhaust pipework for cracking or perishing. Examine air filter housing for carbon deposits.
Fluid Condition
Engine oil should be clean and at the correct level — black, gritty oil indicates deferred servicing. Milky or rust-coloured coolant signals head gasket failure or internal corrosion. Cloudy diesel fuel causes injector damage and filter blockage.
Cold Start
Start the engine and observe. White smoke persisting beyond 2 minutes = coolant in combustion chamber. Blue smoke = oil burning (worn rings or valve seals). Listen for knocking or hunting RPM. A well-maintained engine settles to stable idle within 60–90 seconds.
Load Bank Test
Apply controlled electrical load — stepping through 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of rated output. Monitor voltage stability, frequency, oil temperature, coolant temperature, and fuel consumption. This is the most important check. Request a certificate.
Control Panel
Verify the AMF panel or control module (DSE, ComAp) is functional with no stored fault codes. Check battery condition and charging voltage. Inspect all output terminals and cabling for heat damage, amateur modifications, or bypassed safety systems.
Alternator Output
Measure actual output voltage (±1% of rated) and frequency (50Hz ±0.5Hz) under load. Instability in either indicates AVR issues or winding faults. AVR replacement is low-cost; alternator rewinds are not.

Step 6 — Red Flags: Walk-Away Conditions
Some inspection findings are negotiating points. The following are not — they are reasons to end the process regardless of price.
Milky or emulsified oil or coolant
Almost always indicates head gasket failure or a cracked block. Repair costs frequently exceed the value of the unit.
Seller refuses a running demonstration
The most significant red flag in any used generator transaction. No legitimate reason justifies this refusal.
No service records and no explanation
You're buying blind. An absent history isn't automatically disqualifying — but the seller must be able to account for the gap credibly.
Evidence of amateur electrical modification
Bypassed safety systems, unlabelled wiring additions, or non-standard connections create liability beyond the operational risk. Walk away.
Significant structural rust on the base frame
Lifting, transporting, and operating a structurally compromised unit is a safety issue, not a cosmetic one. Not a negotiating point.
Controller hours inconsistent with service records
If the hours on the display and the log don't match, the history cannot be trusted. Treat the unit as having an unknown background.
A 200 kVA Perkins-engined unit listed at 30% below market rate. Seller claims low hours, admits no service records but says "it's always run fine." Won't start it during the viewing — "battery's flat." Clean canopy, recently pressure-washed.
The pressure washing removed surface rust evidence. The battery excuse is the oldest deflection in the used generator market. The missing service records and refusal to run are two separate walk-away conditions. The below-market price tells you the seller knows exactly what they're selling. Walk away.
Step 7 — Questions to Ask Before You Commit
The quality of the answers tells you as much as the generator itself. A reputable supplier should answer the following without hesitation. Vague, deflecting, or inconsistent responses are data points worth logging.
What are the documented run hours at point of sale?
Confirm this matches the controller display. Request the figure in writing in the sale contract.
When was the last service, and what did it include?
Request the service invoice. Oil and filter change, coolant check, battery test, and load test should all be on it.
Was this unit standby, prime, or continuous duty?
Standby hours are far less wear-intensive than prime or continuous. 10,000 standby hours ≠ 10,000 prime hours.
Does the sale include a warranty, and what does it cover?
Get the warranty scope, duration, and exclusions in writing before completing the purchase.
Has it been load bank tested recently?
Request the test certificate — it should show voltage and frequency readings at each load step, signed and dated.
Are there any outstanding fault codes or known issues?
Ask directly. Then check the control panel yourself. Any discrepancy between the answer and what you see is a significant problem.
Step 8 — Structuring the Purchase to Protect Yourself
A verbal agreement is not protection. Any used industrial generator purchase above nominal value should be accompanied by a written sale contract specifying: run hours at point of sale, the exact condition represented, warranty period and scope, and the basis on which disputes are handled. If the seller won't put the described condition in writing, the description may not be accurate.
Factor delivery and installation into your total cost before agreeing a price. Industrial generators in the 100–500 kVA range require a flatbed or HIAB truck, and site installation — fuel connections, exhaust routing, load transfer switchgear, and commissioning — adds cost that varies by site. For remote or restricted-access sites, get transport and installation quotes before completing the purchase.
Ongoing maintenance should be planned from day one. A generator service contract — covering regular oil and filter changes, coolant checks, battery testing, load testing, and system health monitoring — is the single most effective way to protect a used unit's value and reliability. Deferred maintenance is how most used generators arrive on the market in the first place.
A reputable used generator dealer prepares their stock: oil and filters changed, systems tested, faults identified and either rectified or disclosed, load tests conducted and documented. A private sale carries more risk — the seller often doesn't know the full history, can't provide load test results, and offers no post-sale recourse. If the saving over a dealer-prepared unit is less than £3,000–£5,000, the arithmetic usually favours the specialist.
